Announcing Ashley

Hello everyone! If you haven’t already noticed, I am new around here. My name is Ashley Stuive and, though I am may be new to you, I’ve been a huge Emma Elizabeth Jewelry fan for a while. As her small business grows, she needs some time to do what she does best: make jewelry. That is why I’m here. I am super excited to be her first ever Summer Intern!

How I Got Here

If you ever see this brown-eyed guy in Emma’s posts, chances are that’s my brother Josh. They’ve been dating for over two years so, as you can imagine, Emma is like a sister to me (except almost better because she doesn’t steal my clothes). We talk life, we talk faith, and we absolutely talk jewelry. I worked with her to create a bespoke piece for my fiancé this past Christmas and absolutely fell in love with her business and the process of jewelry making.

Little Bit About Me

I am a senior at Valparaiso University (Valpo) where I will graduate in December with a Communications Degree. Valpo is in northwest Indiana and is probably the most random school I could have gone to; I absolutely love it! Well, the school part is rough and busy and utterly exhausting but also rewarding and so amazing. I met my future husband there, some of my best friends, and found a passion for communications.

I think people are so cool and I love to learn their stories. To me, making people happy is life’s greatest gifts. You just can’t beat a genuine smile.

During the summer I work as a server at Boatwerks in Holland (yum!) and I nanny four adorable kiddos. Kids are my absolute favorite because you always know exactly how they are feeling and what they are thinking – there is no guessing involved. If kids think I look rough, they’ll let me know. If the mac n’ cheese that I slaved over is too mushy, they’ll let me know.

What I’ll Be Doing

I’ll be keeping you all updated with Emma’s latest designs, jewelry shows she’s attending, and other events she will be featured in.  I also get to do some research, help coordinate her displays, update the blog and all kinds of other fun stuff. I don’t know about you, but I am super excited.

My work will help connect you to Emma's brand and her inspiring story while giving her more time to work on new designs. Stayed tuned, this is going to be an amazing summer!

The Gift of an Experience

Text by Ashley Stuive

Let’s take a minute and be honest. Giving good gifts is tough-- I said it.  Between birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, wedding showers, baby showers, Mother’s Day, you name it, the laundry list of gifts we buy is nearing the point of ridiculous. Yet, we love giving gifts because our loved ones deserve to feel special.

Since we are already being honest, special gifts are hard to come by. I like to dream about unique ways to show someone close to me that I care. Naturally, time gets away from me and I end up rushing to the store for the last bouquet of flowers or the only set of dinner plates left on the registry.

With graduation coming up, we are  approaching the point where we can 1) get that last bouquet of flowers or 2) hope to stumble upon something a little better. This is you stumbling.

Why not give your graduate something completely unique: an experience and a personalized gift. They get to spend 3 to 4 hours with Emma in her studio learning how to create their own piece of jewelry from their own design. Not only do they get a unique experience, they get to walk away with a personalized piece of jewelry that they created!

So how does this work? I am glad you asked. Just set up a time that works for your grad and come with a few sketches of their desired piece in mind. You can find all kinds of stones on Etsy, just make sure they are from the US so they get here in time. There are also many stone shops that operate on Instagram like arroks_rocks or RiseandGrind.HH. For $47/hour for 3-4 hours your graduate can create something amazing.

As a gift to my 13 year old sister graduating from 8th grade I bought her a mother of pearl cabochon and spent a few hours in the studio teaching her how to create her very own ring. She brought her design to me and we worked through it and made some slight changes together. Needless to say she loves it!

Metalsmithing - Assisted Studio Session - Guided by Emma

This Christmas season I had the honor of teaching Ashley, my boyfriend's sister, how to create her own bespoke jewelry piece for someone very special to her. We had the most fun working together and she grasped metalsmithing very quickly, she was even a natural! Her vision was a necklace with a heavier chain and a cross.

After researching chains to purchase for the piece it clicked to me to ask her if she would like to learn how to make her own chain and cross pendant. She jumped at the idea and so we scheduled a day and conquered the task! Here are some images of the process and the finished product for you to scroll through:

I would like to extend the invite to you to welcome you to my Grand Rapids studio! Lets schedule a day and create something special for your loved one to cherish for the years to come even more so than if I made it because YOU made it! Not only did you come up with the idea for a bespoke piece of jewelry for them, you also created it. I will dedicate a day to guiding you and teaching you the ins and outs of jewelry making. For $27/hour plus material costs.

One day I would love to teach my own metalsmithing technique classes and by having these assisted studio sessions you will help me to gain confidence in my teaching abilities! Metalsmithing is such a wonderful art form and I am excited to pass it on to others excited to learn like I am! Do not hesitate to contact me with any of your questions by going over to my contact page. Hope to hear from some of you soon! Don't forget Valentines day is just around the corner!

Xoxo, Emma
